Who We Are and What We Do

Our purpose is to know Christ and make Christ known

History

Our church was established in 1891 when The Salvation Army acquired a small brick building in a field adjoining the Gorgie Road entrance to Tynecastle Park football ground. In those days the buildings perimeter fence provided an unofficial grandstand on Saturday afternoons.
In 1897 a new building was built on Muireston Road, which was a purpose built three story building which included living accommodation for the Corps Officers (Ministers).
The distinctive uniform and lively band contributed to the mission of our church. The band, which formed in 1898, which participated, and still continues to do so, in weekly indoor and outdoor meetings. The bands activity included, and includes, visits to hospitals, nursing homes, concert halls and other local and national establishments.
1967 brought a further change of venue when it was seen that a new and improved property was required. A plot of land was purchased on the south side of Gorgie Road, where our building is currently. A subsequent extension was built in 1990 to the front of the building to enhance our community work.
The church in 1997 purchased the adjacent United Free Church building giving further opportunities to expand our community work. We are seeking to upgrade this suite of building to allow us to run larger and more diverse children, youth and adult community work.

Present Day

Recently our work has continued to grow in many different ways. Our community work consists of;

Parent and Toddler Groups
Luncheon Clubs
Over Sixties Club
'Kidz' Clubs
Brownies
Rainbows

Our children's work is growing at a rapid rate and as a result have recently employed someone to lead and develop our children's work.

Our mission is unchanging and in an effort to present the Gospel in a relevant and effective way we offer regular Alpha Classes (an introduction to the Christian faith) on a Sunday Evening. Running alongside is a kidz church to present the gospel in a relevant way.

We aim to offer a healthy balance of Outreach and Mission Programme and Nurture Programmes. Our Nurture programme consists of:

Home Groups
Prayer Hours
Ladies Fellowship
Primary Sunday School
Sunday Schools (Mobilise)
Cell Groups
Youth Fellowship
